The ladies survived!

The ladies survived!

Despite it being one of the longest and harshest Maine winters that we can remember, our much loved bee colonies survived.  We did lose one hive early in the year, perhaps due to mite infestation or insufficient honey stores, but the other 8 hives as well as the two nucleus colonies made it.

The few warm days we've had so far have given the ladies a much needed escape from the hives and the foraging has begun in earnest.  While out working around the farm, cleaning up and planning where to plant this year we are now blessed with the solid hum of each hive busy at work.  There really is nothing like it.

New Additions!

After what seemed like forever, our search for new cows is finally over.  On loan to us from Terra Optima Farm come Jackie, Moxie and her newborn heifer calf.  Snow, cold weather and recent calving have delayed their arrival, but today was the day and now they are here!  Moxie and her baby (not yet named) are cozy and warm in the dairy and Jackie is out with the others making friends and getting to know the place.  We are very excited to have these ladies with us - they are sweet cows and good milkers.  We are happy they are here, safe and sound before this weekend's blizzard.

Toddy Pond Farm has a website!!

We suppose it could be said that it is a sign of how busy we are that after nearly 3 years of farming here at Toddy Pond Farm we are just now launching our website.  While this is partially true, the other half of the story is that we are kinda sorta maybe just a little bit or maybe a lot bit picky.  In other words, if you are going to do something, do it right.  Take the time.  Don't cut corners.  It doesn't really work out in the end.  Certainly not when it comes to farming.

So. We hope you enjoy learning more about our farm by visiting here and we hope to see you in the future.
